IRS Increases Automated Taxpayer Services

- Monday, January 6th, 2014

The IRS is cutting back on live assistance and increasing automated options in 2014.  A few of the changes:

  1. There will be a new online request option on irs.gov that will allow individual taxpayers to instantly view and print a copy of their tax transcripts. The online tool can also be used to request that a transcript by mailed to the taxpayer’s address of record.
  2. All tax refund inquiries made during the first 21 days after a taxpayer files electronically will be directed to the “Where’s My Refund?” tool, irs.gov, and an automated telephone service. IRS customer service representatives will only be able to research the status of a refund if (i) it has been 21 days or more since the return was filed electronically, (ii) more than six weeks have passed since a paper return was mailed, or (iii) the “Where’s My Refund?” tool directs a taxpayer to contact IRS.
